7 Creative (and unusual) Employee Gift Ideas
Give the gift of personalization to your employees this holiday season! Below are examples from past projects created by Luke Johnson Design.

7. Build a Time Capsule
For JPL’s 78th birthday, we encouraged JPLers to capture the ordinary and extraordinary at JPL using traditional crowdsourcing techniques. Images, videos, text from JPL employees were sent to a centralized website where they were curated and shared with the world. This one-day event created 12,000 views from 25 different countries with average of 8 minutes spent on the project’s webpage.

6. Play a Game of Corporate Speak Bingo
Being conscious of words—what they mean, how they are used, and how they evolve—is an important part of internal communication. Corporate Speak Bingo hopefully makes this reflective exercise fun.

4. Design a Storytelling Booth
Created specifically for JPL’s Take Your Child to Work Day, this storytelling prototype explored capturing stories. Upon entering the booth, children were greeted by JIM, a beam of light projected inside the booth. Using Wizard-of-Oz-like technology, JIM asked ‘What do you think we do at JPL?’ and encouraged children to leave a message for the future.

3. Document (overheard) Office Quotes.
Talk of the Studio documented overhead quotes in Nokia’s Advanced Design creative studio for an entire year. Here’s how it worked: If I overheard an interesting word, phrase, or conversation, I wrote it down. At the end of each week, I would send this collection quotes to the entire studio in an email. All quotes are anonymous, appeared in the order in which they were said, any anybody could submit a quote to appear in the email. I did this reflective exercise everyday for a year, and gave the resulting book to all my colleagues at our Holiday party.

2. Make a Fictitious Secret Santa
Instead of a real secret santa with real gifts, try a fictitious one. Created for the Holiday Issue of the ADQ, a quarterly magazine created at Nokia for reflecting, archiving, and improving the design process, this secret santa list was easy to create. An email was sent to everyone in the studio with an alphabetical list of names. Each person was then asked to write what they would want to give the person below them. Each request was sent individually to me, and then formated in the magazine

1: Write a Thank You (essay)
Co-authored with Rhys Newman, VP of Nokia’s Everyday Adventure design team. This essay looks at some of the characteristics that fosters happy, healthy, and creative teams (hint: No Dickheads!). The article gained over 13,000 clicks in its first 3 days and was the #1 most read article on Medium for 1 week! While the essay covers tips on on how to foster studio culture, it’s also a sincere love letter to great teams!
