Copy of External design strategies for internal audiences.

We all know the negative connotations associated with HR. I believe there is an opportunity for design to help change this narrative.

Traditionally “external” design strategies such as marketing, branding, and human-centered design should also apply to internal challenges. I believe the following methods and values can improve the products HR delivers to its customers—employees.

I believe design thinking can improve the products HR delivers to its customers. Here is my approach:

EMBED > CONSULT

It takes time to make meaningful products and positive culture change within an organization.

Embedding, and becoming part of the team, makes it possible to understand the evolving needs of the company and employees to make sure HR is designing the right product—not just any product.

PRODUCT MINDSET > SERVICE MINDSET

It’s increasingly easy to outsource HR departments, but difficult to understand the nuances of workplace culture.

HR, like other parts of the org, needs to have a strong understanding of the products they’re building—and how to deliver these experiences within its culture.

MEDIA DESIGN > TECH SILVER BULLETS

The medium is the message.

Trained as a media designer, I understand the pros and cons of a wide-range of media types—from email to video, graphic design to animation—so that we’re choosing the right medium (or mediums) to deliver the most impactful message

VALUES

Hard-earned and consistent over time, the following characteristics can be found throughout my work. This I believe:

Teamwork

The projects on this website are a product of collaboration, either through teams I have managed or by working with HR’s subject matter experts.

Engaging experiences create engaged employees.

Consciously designed, purposeful products send a message: “We value this program. We value you.” They reflect an investment by the company in its people and culture.

Sustainable and scalable solutions

It’s nice to make beautiful things...but if the work can’t be continued once the design team leaves or is not relevant in two years - what’s the point. Products—whether they are platforms, templates, or tools—should always be created with sustainability and scalability in mind.

HR is often complex when it needs to be simple and human.

HR products are often complex, so creating simple and engaging content is essential.

I believe HR products should encourage employees to make educated choices for themselves and their families, allowing them to get even more from their benefits.
